Audience Feedback 360 Video....

Hi everyone,

Today I composed a focus group of the age category of people I am aiming my music video towards being 13-24 year olds. This feedback allowed me to question my idea for positive and negative aspects and look for ways of improvement:

Focus Group....

Hi everyone,

Today I have chosen to do a focus group with my class in order to get responses to my ideas for my music video. This class chosen are a suitable age at 17-18 year olds, which is the middle of my target audience age expected for my chosen genre (13 - 24 year olds). Therefore, the feedback received will be even more relevant when considering the concepts for my music video.

Also, to add further interest within the focus group, it will be filmed on a 360 degree camera, so all of the reactions from each individual can be easily and accurately filmed.

These are the questions that I asked:
  • What do you think of my idea, and why?

  • What do you like about my ideas, and what idea do you think is the most interesting aspect from my pitch?

  • Do you think that my audience of ages 13 - 24 year olds, is correct for my music video ideas and for the song choice? Why?

  • You are all within my age category of 13 - 24 year olds, from what you have heard and read today, would you have expected this context to be included within an Indie Pop music video that you would watch? If so what specific features from my ideas make this?

  • Do you agree or disagree with my idea of keeping the music video more performance based, and why do you think that?

  • Do you like the idea that I am only using one actor to interpret the artist within my music video, or do you think this limits my potential opportunities with my music video in regards to my song choice? Why?

  • What rating out of 10 would you give my idea? (1 being poor and 10 being great)

  • Would you be interested in watching this music video once it's completed?

  • Do you have any questions in regards to the concept?

Soon I will post the 360 degree music video.

After my music video is completed I will then ask the focus group similar questions again, to see if it reach their expectations and if it is suitable for my chosen age category, in regards to their interests, wants and desires of a music video.

Research into Music Videos 2....

Hi everyone,

I decided to look further into the concept of music videos and the difference in how the viewer decodes the message in comparison to the producers intended message. This video that I found on YouTube by 'Film Riot' is interesting to see how a professional producer and creator of films and music videos:

I found this useful as it gave me information of what is good to include within a music video and what to avoid. This especially helped me when he was commenting on some mistakes specifically with the story-line, therefore it has given me a further insight to what the audience might find confusing when it comes to the idea and story-lines. Even though, my music video is going to be more performance base, I am still including a link between lyrics and visuals in order for the audience to constantly stay connected between the song and my music video itself.

Research into Music Videos 1....

Hi everyone,

This is just some information about a music video, that I found interesting to watch and learn about, and I believe that this information will help me with my planning and final production process towards my finished music video:

After watching this YouTube clip I decided to go and watch the music video which I thought was really good and coincided with the genre of the music and the overall story-line to which the initial lyrics of the song entails.

This is the final music video which 'Film Riot' produced:

I think that the post-production editing with colour correction highly improved the overall image of the music video, and is definitely a technique that I will include within my final piece. I have already attempted this within my 1 minute music video, and I like the uplifting difference that it made to the overall look of my piece, especially when generating the visual aspect of the sunset.

Also, it was interesting to know how you can create a larger atmosphere on a budget, for instance lighting the fire created that extra effect and feel of a social gathering. Furthermore, the use of different shots, mostly mid-shots of the crowd allowed it to seem like there where more people than there actually was, which is interesting as the audience receives a completely different perception to what actually was happening in reality. This again proves how music videos link to Blumler and Katz's 'Uses of Gratifications theory' as the audience will watch music videos as a 'Diversion (escapism)' from reality and everyday life, because they find what they are watching more fun and exciting then reality.

Music Video Characters....

Hi everyone,

Within my music video it is going to be more performance base, as there will be no definite narrative. The overall, vision that I am hoping to achieve is the main focus being on the artist, with him occasionally interacting with the audience by breaking the fourth wall throughout - which is a key feature of a music video.

The actor that I will be using to play this role is my brother, Jake, who is also the actor which I have used in my previous preliminary task and my one minute music, which in both he portrays the singer Phillip Phillips. I believe that he will be suited for this role as he characterises the rustic outdoor feel that I am going for.

Pre-production stage updates....

Hi everyone,

Currently I am in the pre-production stage of my music video, I have thought of many ideas to include within it, and now I am trying to convert these ideas into a storyboard. The storyboard overall will help me plan my shots better when shooting, and according to Pete Fraser planning as much as possible before to filming is highly important in order to be organised and to get a successful music video. I will keep you updated on my planning stages as I come to the production.

BORNS - 'Seeing Stars' - Music Video Written Pitch....

Hi everyone,

This is my music video pitch for Borns - 'Seeing Stars':

Music Video
Borns ‘Seeing Stars’

Borns is part of Interscope Records, and his song ‘Seeing Stars’ is the song that I will be creating a music video for. The song genre is Indie Pop, which the artist already has an acoustic music video for, but by also creating one for the main audio, I think that this will give the song a fun and entertaining visual setting. Smarts Productions aim is to give the song an overall creative and lively feel, providing the audience with further insights of what the song means.

Smarts Productions is a trusted company that provides a creative flair, can deliver a strong product, and will produce the work to the highest of its ability. Also, Smarts Productions is very good at keeping on track with schedules and meeting deadlines, and would make a great production company to make this music video. We are already experienced in this area, and have produced music videos for the artist Phillip Phillips and his songs: ‘Gone Gone Gone’ and ‘Home’.

We have many exciting ideas for the music video to include, which will resemble Borns’ interests. We will achieve this by creating features like, incorporating lyrics with visuals, nature and being outside - which we know are some of the features included within his previous music videos.

These are our initial ideas to include in the music video:

  • A relationship with lyrics and visuals.
  • Various locations, switching from different shots of the outside landscape, including close-ups of the artist.
  • Cut different shots to the beat of the song, making the music video visually look as lively as the song itself.
  • Include fireworks, which will emphasise the idea of ‘Stars’ within the song.
  • The main focus will be on the artist, as they will be the only character involved in the music video, giving them full attention. Also, by incorporating the artist within their own music video makes it more personal for the artist to experience, because they are further interacting with their song.

  • The overall aim for the music video is for it to feel fun, joyful and exciting, whilst being aesthetically pleasing. Also, bringing a new meaning and interpretation to the song than what the acoustic version demonstrates. The music video will do this by including an elated atmosphere through using various different locations, overall elevating this feeling well. Therefore, attracting the social demographic of teenagers, as the music video will be intriguing and exciting to watch.
