Sped-up Shots Influence....

Hi everyone,

Within my draft videos it is clear that I have sped-up clips particularly within the break of the song. The ultimately enables the music video to slow down with longer length clips being inserted, however the sped-up clips allow.

When filming my music video I made sure that when filming clips that I would want to have sped-up, which is usually used in post, I had an effect already on my camera entitle the 'Miniature Effect'. As well, as making the picture quality more pristine and vivid in colour when filming with this effect on automatically speeds up the clip - however, it is important to keep the camera still otherwise the effect would't be successful. Ultimately saving me time in post-production as the clip was already sped-up with colour correction - making this a perfect effect to use.

Within Ed Sheeran's 'Castle on the Hill' music video, the song is upbeat including mise-en-scene resembling a club and a group of youths adding to the fun and uplifting vibe the song brings. However, during the break of the song, sped-up clips are used - ultimately letting the music video slow down, but also allowing the tempo and fun beat of the song kept up with the sped -up clip.

Influences for the beginning of my music video....

Hi everyone,

After receiving from my peers I decided to look further into other variations of opening up my music. As a result, I came across Shawn Mendes' music video for 'Something Big'.

The beginning of the music video starts with the artist getting out of bed with the score being different and the song, connoting an early dawn as the birds are tweeting. This allows the artist to be more relatable to their audiences, as they are doing ordinary activities - linking too Richard Dyer's Star Theory of being 'ordinary but extraordinary' for the consumer.

When the artist turns on the radio after brushing his teeth is a fun and creative way to start a song in a music video - and I like this concept - therefore I will be definitely including this idea within my music video.

Overall, this opening of the music video allows the audience to ease into it, as the song itself fast and upbeat - therefore, by starting of with a tranquil score of the birds and the everyday morning schedule, leads the audience to a big surprise when the beat starts kicking in and the song begins to play. This surprise is then uplifted by the random, fun and chaotic atmosphere down the street, including an alpaca and a marching band.

I will be definitely using this concept within my music video, as my song is similar with the idea of the instant and intriguing beat at the beginning of the song. Therefore, by having an opening before the song begins playing adds to the suspense and the surprise of the fast paced cuts that I am going to include.

BORNS - Seeing Stars - Third Draft Feedback....

Hi everyone,

Today I received feedback for my Third Draft, which stated:

  • Really like the added graphics to the video, as it added to defining the lyrics through visuals.
  • I particularly like the opening of the music video with the artists name and song title being presented, it opens up the video well as it reminds the viewer what the song is and who the song is by. The text is also in a writing style which makes it more creative - almost like the artist has wrote it - connecting them further in the music video. Also, I like how it overlaid on top of a clip rather than a plain white or black background, making it more interactive.
  • Improvements include the use of colour correction through to make it more of the summer vibe stated within your pitch.
  • Overall, I really like the improvements and it is clear that you are taking the criticism on board - and the results show, as I think it's great.
I will again take this criticism on board as I produce my final music video draft.

BORNS - Seeing Stars - Third Draft....

Hi everyone,

Looking back at my feedback from my Draft 2, I have again improved my music video by adding a bit of a story with the artist at the beginning of the music video with the artist waking up and switching on the radio to only play their song. I think that this opening adds more of a creative approach to the beginning of the song and slowly eases the viewer into the surprise of the quick and upbeat beat followed by the switching on of the radio.

(Within the draft the screen occasionally goes blank at parts towards the end - this just resembles the spaces that I need to fill in with other shots).

Premiere Pro Effects....

Hi everyone,

Today I decided to do some research into effects that I could include within my music video. I found this tutorial video on how to do a 'Pulsate Effect':

I will be definitely be using this technique within my music video as it generates a slow feeling but will still pulsate with the beat of the song. Therefore, it will be perfect to include within the bridge of the song.

I tried out this technique on a clip that I will be using within my music video - preferably within the bridge/break segment:

BORNS - Seeing Stars - Second Draft Feedback....

Hi everyone,

After releasing my second draft, I asked for audience feedback again from my peers in order to give me the ability to improve further again with my music video.

Here is the feedback that I received:

  • The urban shots that you have included work well alongside the rural scenery.
  • Graphics need to be yet included, which would again add another element to the music video.
  • The music video still needs some form of story with the artist, as suggested within the First Draft Feedback - e.g. the actor could get up out of bed, get change and then make some toast with the toast popping up to the beat of the song.
  • Overall, the improvements from what was discussed after your first draft are definitely noticeable and make a huge difference to your music video by making it more varied with added diversity - making it more interesting to watch.
I will again be definitely taking this feedback on board, as it helped me to improve First Draft immensely to my second Draft and the difference is noticeable, as it feels more like a music video. Therefore, these comments made will be definitely taken on board when creating my Third Draft.

BORNS - Seeing Stars - Second Draft....

Hi everyone,

After taking on the feedback from my previous audience/peer feedback I did more filming out in the urban area of Salford, which gave me amazing shots. This was a great achievement considering the fact that the filming day was spontaneous shots, due previous planning not being able to be produced because of the the location is far away therefore previous location scouting shots could not be occur. However, research via the internet provided me with a rough idea about the area, therefore I knew that the bridges, waterside and picturesque building at night would be perfect in order to make my music video be unique and colourful - linking with the genre of my song being fun and upbeat and consisting of a summer vibe.

Day 6 Shooting....

Hi everyone,

After receiving feedback from my first draft, I have decided to go and film in an urban location, this being Salford. Due to the far away location I was unable to plan ahead for shots, however these are a few shots taken on set:

Filming at Salford actually gave me a lot of great shots to include within my music video, along with photos to include in my CD Package, and Website gallery. These urban shots will add more versatility to my locations, making my media products more interesting to view.

New Storyboard....

Hi everyone,

After receiving feedback from my First Draft, I decided to include some urban shots in my music video, therefore I am going to film at Salford (Media City). I unfortunately cannot do any physical location scouting, due to the far distance, but from the online research, I came up with a few shots types - shown within my storyboard below. However, most of the filming at Salford will be completely spontaneous, so some of the shots within the storyboard may change during the post-production process.

Here is my new storyboard for my music video for BORNS 'Seeing Stars':

Day 6 Shooting Schedule....

Hi everyone,

From my 'First Draft Audience Feedback', I decided to film in an urban location in order to diversify my locations and shots. As a result, I decided to choose Salford, as it is Media City, therefore, it is a perfect picturesque location to film - perfect for a music video vibe.

However, because of the distance of the location, I can't plan ahead for the shots, i.e. though location scouting, therefore, the shots that I am going to take cannot be scheduled, thus are going to be spontaneous. Even though they are going to be spontaneous, I will take into consideration the possibilities of shots when I arrive, from online research, for example bridge shots, especially at night from the pictures found on the internet.

BORNS - Seeing Stars - First Draft Feedback....

Hi everyone,

After recently releasing my first draft I have asked for feedback from my peers in order so that I can improve further in order to make a great music video.

Here is the feedback that I received:
  • Good range of shots, well edited and pace maintained throughout.
  • Good use of timelapses.
  • Good use of colour correction, try and ensure all shots have a similar consistency of colour to fit the mood of the song.
  • Obviously you are going to have a go at doing some graphic overlays which I think could really make the difference.
  • I’m not sure the shots in front of the gate and field really convey what a music video should - especially such a positive one.
  • Really like the whip pans into the next shot and the transitions where he seems to sequence into the next shot, e.g. jumping into the next shot. You could perhaps use this technique again from the interior shots.
  • Some interior shots needed or different location/walking down the street/urban shots would also add something extra to the scenery and location of the music video to add more variation to it.
Some ideas:
  • Getting up, making breakfast whilst lip-syncing…mix of tracking shots, MS and CU, toast popping to the beat, spreading butter to the rhythm whilst singing, toast is burnt but he doesn’t care as he’s happy.
  • Or lip-syncing whilst sat on the sofa watching TV, if you can get 2 other people to be in it film the first shot as a time-lapse with just two either side and the middle empty. Then film him by himself lip-syncing…there’s lots of stuff going on around him but he’s happy anyway.
  • More focus on aspects of mise-en-scene, i.e urban shots.
  • The actor could write on a card to his loved one and insert it into the postbox before the postbox shot.
Improvements:
  • 1.54 - bit awkward that shot, is he looking out for a car?
  • 2.52 - the horse shots don’t really add much to it or the pan shot of the road.
  • I think the ending needs to be more of a ‘final shot’, with perhaps a close-up of the actor singing directly into the camera.

I will be definitely be taking these comments on board, as I want to create a successful and enjoyable music video. Therefore, a second draft will be released soon - hopefully including more varied shots like urban shots mentioned within my feedback, which I think would add a better variety of shots within my music video.

Using a GoPro....

Hi everyone,

Using the Go-Pro throughout my shooting process was easy to use and due to its size and protective casing, allowed me to get what would be difficult shots with a DSLR camera.
For instance it allowed me get this shot successfully:

This shot will add as a 'fill-in' shot in contrast to my other clips and with the car moving at a fast pace allows the shot to fit in well with the fast upbeat rhythm of my chosen song 'Seeing Stars by Borns.
